JazzMint's Garden
Jazzmint is my drag Identity, but also my other half. All of the work featured in her garden and on this page is research which informs the aesthetic and performative decisions I make in relation to her lifestyle and drag performance.
Jazzmint was a Mattel Brand, Jasmine Disney Princess Barbie Doll who I have adopted and given a new life. The garden is an exploration into what it means to have an incongruous identity in the virtual age. I am interested in exploring what it means to be existing both physically and virtually, as male and female, as plastic and human, etc. The reimagining of these binary systems is integral to Jazzmint and her lifestyle.
The first concern I had for Jazzmint was creating a sustainable life, so we started the garden. She then had Chia seeds to eat. We grew the Chia in plastic doll stuffing pellets as a soil substitute, to ensure they were food safe for her.
Next I went on vacation to the Jersey Shore. Shopping, and fun in the sun filled my trip.
What does it mean to perform gender? And in the age of the virtual, what exists as construction, and what exists as reality?
I am now exploring handbags.
